Argentina, Interesting Business Opportunities Release Date - June 5, 2008
RIMOUSKI, June 5 2008 – It is with great optimism and satisfaction that the members of the Rimouski delegation have returned from their recent visit to Argentina. The meetings that took place in Comodoro Rivadavia and Buenos Aires paved the way for tangible opportunities on a short-term basis and for future scientific collaboration between UQAR, ISMER and Argentina. To quote Mr. Éric Forest, mayor of Rimouski: « Our goal was to position the unique expertise available in Rimouski and come back with real opportunities, and this is exactly what we have accomplished. Already, two interesting projects have been defined and are in the planning phase. »

The positive outcome of these meetings is, without any doubt, due to the years of cooperation between ISMER, UQAR and the Antarctica National Direction of Argentina and to a visit that took place last January, that helped confirm the opportunities, set the ground for the recent meetings and raised the awareness level about our involvement in Argentina.

The team took part in more than fifteen meetings, discussions, presentations, and signed four collaboration protocols which identified the specific areas of development to be prioritized.

Comodoro Rivadavia and Rimouski, both being located along the sea and sharing the same latitudes, have several aspects in common. Comodoro Rivadavia hopes to leverage the growth of the oil sector in order to foster development in information technology, oceanography and renewable energy. Thanks to the strong winds prevailing throughout Patagonia, the wind power industry offers a lot of growth potential. The city officials also showed great interest in Rimouski’s expertise in ocean observation systems, since they are planning to enhance the data available for the management of the maritime resources in the Gulf of San Jorge.  More
