Hydrogen Bus Fleet Continues Operations after Summer Recess Release Date - October 30, 2007 OTTAWA, ON - With the resumption of Parliament, Hydrogen on the Hill’s fleet of Ford H2ICE buses is once again providing environmentally-friendly transportation to the Senate and Parliamentary personnel in Ottawa. The buses are now fully operational and refueling at Ottawa's first permanent hydrogen fueling station. The first bus was delivered to the Senate of Canada December 7th, 2006 and the remaining two Senate buses were put into service in 2007 and by late June, all three buses had accumulated almost 10,000 kilometers in mileage. Over the summer, the Hydrogen on the Hill shuttle buses were exhibited during Clean Air Day on the Hill on June 6th, and were used to transport international delegates to various locations. The hydrogen shuttles were recently showcased during Natural Resources Canada’s Science and Technology FunFest on October 14, 2007, which gave the public an opportunity to ride the buses. Before the start of FunFest, Natural Resources Canada launched Ottawa’s first hydrogen fueling station. The station, provided by Air Liquide Canada and funded in part by Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Transportation Fuel Cell Alliance (CTFCA) program, now provides high-pressure, fast-fill refueling, and fully meets the H2ICE buses’ daily fuel requirements. “With pollution and climate change continuing to be issues of global importance, projects of this nature are absolutely critical to the commercial deployment of clean transportation technologies, and we look forward to the public knowing more about opportunities related to hydrogen” said Rodney Semotiuk, CEO of ATFCAN. "We have only scratched the surface in terms of what can be achieved with hydrogen internal combustion engine technology and Ford is serious about maintaining our edge in this field," said John Lapetz, Senior Manager, Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Program, Ford Motor Company. "Projects like Hydrogen on the Hill are critical to helping advance this technology." Hydrogen on the Hill is part of a nation-wide demonstration project of 10 H2ICE shuttle buses from Ford, and is receiving funding support from Industry Canada’s Hydrogen Early Adopters Program. In addition to the three buses in Ottawa, two buses have been deployed in Vancouver and two in Prince Edward Island. The placement of the three remaining buses will be announced shortly.
